1. General
1.1 Safeguarding Information:
CBS Canterbury is a division of Heartland Building Society (Society). The Society understands the importance of safeguarding the personal and financial information of its customers and upholding their rights under the Privacy Act 1993.
The Society does not sell, publish, share or give away personal or financial information relating to its customers to any third parties except as set out in this Privacy Policy.
1.2 Information:
This Privacy Policy applies to:
a) personal information submitted by you (as a customer or recipient of services provided by the Society) on the Society's website (http://www.cbscanterbury.co.nz) and other CBS Canterbury websites owned or operated by the Society) (the “Websites”) and otherwise in the course of receiving or using any of the Society's services;
b) any information automatically retrieved during your visits to the Websites; and
c) any other personal information received by the Society from you from time to time.

By accessing and browsing the Websites, you consent to the collection, use, disclosure, storage and processing of your information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
1.4 Changes to Privacy Policy:
We may modify, alter or otherwise update this Privacy Policy from time to time, with or without notice to you. Such amendments will be effective immediately upon the posting of the amended Privacy Policy on one or more of the Websites. 2. Treatment of Personal Information
2.1 Collection, Use and Disclosure of Personal Information:
a) Visitors: You may browse and access information contained on the Websites without providing personally identifiable information. However, some information may be automatically retrieved while visiting the Websites. The Society may collect information about you, including information about the products and services that you view from time to time.
b) Personal information: To register and apply for certain of the Society’s services on or through the Websites, you may need to submit personal information such as your name, physical address, phone number, date of birth, email address and other personal details. You may also be asked to submit further information via the Websites from time to time.
c) Use of information: Your personal information will only be used by the Society:
i. in order to communicate with you (by any means whatsoever, including electronic communication such as email or text message) about the Society’s internet banking or other services, and to provide these services to you;
ii. to process and consider your application for the Society’s services, including the opening of bank accounts, the provision of home loans, and internet banking facilities;
iii. to verify that you are entitled to log in on the Websites as a Society customer;
iv. to communicate with you in relation to the Websites (by any means whatsoever, including electronic communication such as email or text message), on matters relating to the range of services provided or on the types of products that the Society offers, and about the Society in general;
v. to keep you informed of and promote (by any means whatsoever, including electronic communication such as email or text message) current or planned events of the Society and its selected business partners; and
vi. to conduct market research, generate and provide statistical analysis, or to conduct (and authorise others to conduct) credit and other informational checks.

e) Disclosure of information: Unless you have authorised the Society to do so, the Society will not rent or sell personal information relating to you and will not disclose it to any third party except:
i. where disclosure is connected to the purposes for which the information was collected, as described in this clause 2.1;
ii. to the Society's service providers, communications and network operators and selected business partners in order to provide the relevant services to you;
iii. to the Society's agencies, research firms and direct marketing firms engaged by the Society in connection with certain marketing initiatives that may be undertaken by the Society from time to time;
iv. to relevant authorities, parties and/or applicable intellectual property rights holders (or their representatives) if the Society considers that you are in breach of the Society's or any other person's rights or the Society’s terms and conditions for CBS Canterbury accounts; or
v. where required, or permitted, by law.
2.2 Access to, editing and deleting personal information:
a) Accuracy of information: The Society takes every effort to ensure customer personal details are accurate. In order to determine if your personal details are accurately captured, you should contact your nearest Society Branch.

2.3 Storage and processing of personal information:
a) Storage and processing: The Society will store and process your personal information in New Zealand. If you are a customer of the Society, the Society hold such personal information both before and after the termination or cancellation of your account or such other services as the Society may provide to you, but only for as long as the Society is lawfully entitled to use that information. Any information will be stored in accordance with the Society's "Document Retention Policy".
3. Cookies and Automatically Retrieved Information
3.1 Cookies and Retrieved Information:
a) Cookies: When you enter the Websites your computer may automatically be issued with a cookie. These are text files that identify your computer to our server, so that when you visit the particular Website again, the cookie will identify your computer to the Society’s web server. This allows us to improve the speed and reliability of the Websites and provide you with a better service. Cookies in themselves do not identify individual users and are not used to collect or store personal information about you. Visitors have the ability to set their computers to notify them when a cookie is issued, or to reject any cookies, but the latter means that certain of the Society’s services may not be provided to the visitor.

The information automatically retrieved is used in statistical and aggregate formats to assess the effectiveness of and to improve the Websites and the Society's services, and to also determine the preferences and interests of visitors to the Websites.
4. Security
4.1 Username and Password:
The provisions of this clause should be read in conjunction with the specific provisions of any of the Society’s applicable terms and conditions, for example, our Internet Banking Terms and Conditions.
a) Secure Password: Certain services offered via the Websites may require you to have a username and password. We recommend the password you select should not relate to any readily accessible data such as your name, birth date, address, telephone number, driver's licence, licence plate or passport. Nor should it be an obvious combination of letters and numbers, including sequential or same numbers or letters. You may not use another person’s account, username or password.
b) Your responsibility: You are entirely responsible for maintaining the security of your username and password, and for all activity which occurs on or through your username and password, whether authorised or unauthorised. You should change your password and notify the Society immediately if you believe that your username and password have been used without authorisation. The Society shall not have any liability for your failure to comply with these obligations or for any losses caused by unauthorised use of your username and password. You may be liable for the losses of the Society or others due to such unauthorised use. You agree that all information provided to the Society by you in relation to any username and password shall be current, complete and accurate.
